Do you want to learn all about baby ferrets but don’t know where to begin? There are many other ferret lovers worldwide who are puzzled by the sheer magnitude of information about these cute little animals. Whether you’re thinking about buying a baby ferret, living with a person who is passionate about these mammals, or simply interested in learning more, it’s best to start with some basic knowledge.
Ferrets are from the Mustelid family and are related to weasels, skunks and otters, and are all able to produce musk. Some countries allow the glands responsible for musk production to be surgically removed so that the odor will not be so strong, but other countries, like the UK and Australia, find such alterations are not really necessary.
Ferrets are mammals that have the ability to produce natural oils that help to keep their fur shiny, smooth and healthy-looking. Washing your ferret frequently can remove some of these oils and you may find that they enjoy regular bathing. Ferrets do have the tendency to have long nails, so regular nail-cutting sessions will be required.
When searching for a baby ferret you’ll discover that there are many color options open to you. There are also different types of ferret breeds.
Be mindful that the younger a ferret is, the more delicate they are and difficult to maintain. However, if you get one when they’re a baby, then you have the opportunity to train your kit right from the start.
As your baby ferrets gets older, you will find that they will more readily welcome the company of other ferrets. Older ferrets, just like some adults, may actually try to dominated younger ferrets. They also have the tendency to develop cliques and may not be as open to accept new ferrets if you’re planning to adopt other ferrets.
Laws and regulations vary from country to country, state to state and even city to city. Be sure you’re aware of any rules in your area. There are some countries that don’t permit ferrets to be house pets, and there are others that do allow them but impose specific restrictions. When traveling with your ferret you need to be sure you’re not going to, or through, places that don’t allow them. They could be impounded, perhaps even euthanized and you could be facing a significant fine.
Ferrets are, by nature, adventurous and curious. They need to be let out of their cages for at least a couple of hours each day so they can roam around and satisfy their curiosity. This will aid in having a happy and healthy ferret. They could actually dance around, in a somewhat strange way. Sometimes it might seem like they’re getting ready to attack, but often they’re just playing.
Because your baby ferret is naturally curious, you’ll want to make sure they are checked on a regular basis. They might swallow small objects, like pieces of toys they’ve been chewing on, that could damage their digestive tracts. Also, if you let them outside, odds are they could become prey to other animals like snakes or hawks.
Ferrets haven’t always been house pets. Prior to being available as pets, ferrets were used by hunters. This was because they were able to squeeze themselves into small spaces. They were treasured by hunters in Roman times.
